Introduction: accidents with biological material can transmit different pathogens carried by the blood and consequently can lead to serious harmful aspects in the health of the professionals. Purpose: identify the conducts of the professionals who are victims of occupational accidents with biological material in three units of pre- hospital care in a municipality of the Triângulo Mineiro. Materials and Methods: this is a transversal cut study approved by the Committee of Ethics in Research of the Ribeirão Preto School of Nursing, University of São Paulo, Ribeirão Preto. Of the 279 eligible health professionals, 228 accepted the invitation to take part in the study and were interviewed individually during the period of February to June of 2013. Results: of the 228 subjects interviewed, 65 reported having suffered 87 accidents with biological material in the last twelve months. In relation to their conduct, 43 (66.1%) professionals made the notification by means of the Communication of Accident at Work (CAT) and went in search of specialized attendance at the Centre for Testing and Counseling (CTA); 7 (10.81%) only made a notification of the accident; 2 (3.1%) only went in search of specialized attendance and 13 (20.0%) did not carry out any conduct after the accident with biological material. Prevalence of underreporting was of 23.1%. We draw attention to the fact that 10 (76.9%) individuals who underwent percutaneous exposure and 9 (69.2%) of the subjects that reported accidents with blood, did not carry out any post-exposure conduct. The main reasons reported for not notifying the accident were excess of bureaucracy for the filling out of the forms and lack of information given by the heads of department. The reasons reported for not going in search of specialized attendance, were bureaucracy, difficulty in getting to the place of attendance and lack of information from the heads of department. Conclusion: individuals that underwent accidents which were considered serious, or in other words, percutaneous or involving blood, did not carry out any post-exposure conduct, and consequently did not receive the legal support nor the specific prophylactic measures for this type of accident. Identification of the reasons alleged for not following the recommended conduct may contribute to the development and implementation of prevention programmes directed to these workers
