Abstract in English
Cross-sectional study which aimed to assess last year Bachelor students in Physical Education's knowledge on diabetes mellitus in São Paulo State, Brazil. The random sample consisted of 69 students belonging to three private Physical Education Universities. Data were collected through a questionnaire divided into two parts. In the first part were assessed sociodemographic variables and in the second, composed by 27 questions, 19 multiple-choice alternatives and eight true or false, variables related to the concepts' knowledge, signs and symptoms, and physical exercise. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistic. Results related to students' characterization showed that most of them were male, aged between 20 and 24 year old and single. With regard to the family income 55,0% perceived from one to six minimum wages. On questions related to the concepts category was found that the highest rate of correct answers was related to the characteristics of type 2 DM, 37 (53,6%), and the lowest for the classification of diabetes mellitus and the value of glycemia that reflects hypoglycemia 7 (10,1%), respectively. Questions related to the category of signs and symptoms showed that the highest rate of correct answers were related to the signs and symptoms of hypoglycemia, 27 (39,1%), and lower accuracy rate was related to the classic symptoms of DM, and the signs and symptoms of hyperglycemia, 11(15,9%), respectively. Regarding the issues related to the physical exercise's category it was found that the highest rate of correct answers was related to the recommendations for exercising prescription for subjects with DM, to the physical exercise for subjects with peripheral neuropathy, and exercise for subjects with retinopathy and diabetic nephropathy, 55 (79,7%), respectively. The lowest rate of correct answers was related to the amount of carbohydrates recommended for subjects with DM in drug therapy during longer and intense exercise, 4 (5,8%). Regarding the number of correct and incorrect answers in the questionnaire, it was found that 12 (17,4%) students answered correctly 12 and 13 questions, respectively. It is noteworthy that 2 (2,9%) students showed lack of knowledge in the 27 questions, thus showing an average of 11,1 and a standard deviation of 3,4. In relation to the number of incorrect answers it was found that 13 (18,8%) students missed 15 questions and one student (1,4%) missed 23 questions, thus finding an average of 15,0 and a standard deviation of 2,8. It was concluded that students had satisfactory success's rate in exercise's category and inadequate in concepts, signs and symptoms' category. It is recommended that the Universities focuse on efforts to include in the curricular grade of Physical Educations' course, subjects related to physical exercise and chronic diseases, mainly DM, aiming to the great demand from people with this disease among the population.
