Abstract in English
This descriptive study aimed to develop an educational module on Endocrine Physiology in a Virtual Learning Environment, to implement the module with the students of the Nursing Program and to carry out the evaluation of the students and module. Data collection was carried out during the second semester of 2007, after the research project was approved by the Research Ethics Committee of the University of São Paulo at Ribeirão Preto College of Nursing. The study was carried out in three stages, and the sample consisted of 44 students. In the first stage, the educational module on Endocrine Physiology was developed. In the following stage the planning of the implementation of the module was done and the last stage consisted of the planning of the evaluation of the students and module. The educational module on Physiology was produced from the cycle for developing distance courses through the web and was available at TelEduc. The implementation occurred from November 11th 2007 to December 10th 2007. Presence meetings were used for guiding the students about TelEduc and discussing doubts. The distance activities included: exercises, discussion forums and chats. Results evidenced the predominance of the female gender 41 (93.2%) and that most (75%) students were between 19 and 23 years old. The Internet was the most used means of obtaining updated knowledge by 23 (59.0%) students and all 44 (100%) had Internet access. Twenty-three (56.1%) students at the institution used the computer and most of them (58.1%) learned how to use it on their own. Regarding the formative evaluation of students, comparatively, the access to forum was more spread (CV=86,80%), followed by chat (CV=65,14%), exercises (CV=50,16%) and support material (CV=44%). The mean grade in exercise 1 was 8,2; in exercise 2 was 9,8; in exercise 3 was 9,3; in exercise 4 was 8,7; in exercise 5 was 9,1; in exercise 6 was 9,0 and in exercise 7 was 8,9. On average, 30 students participated in each forum. The mean participation in chat A and B was 22 students. Regarding the summative evaluation, the mean grade on the exam was 6,5. There was no significative correlation between the grade on the exam and the variables of access: support material, exercises, forums and chat. The final mean grade of the students in the module was 8,5. The evaluation of the module by the students regarding the items content and interaction showed that most of the answers obtained, respectively 179 (84,03%) and 174 (83,25%), consider the characteristics were fulfilled. For the item activities, 192 (89,30%) answers also considered the characteristics were fulfilled. The item time of answer obtained 79 (94,04%) answers that consider the characteristics were satisfied, the quality of the interface obtained 206 (95,81%) answers indicating the characteristics were fulfilled. TelEduc demonstrated to be an efficient tool to provide educational material to support the teaching-learning process of Endocrine Physiology. Hence, the use of technology in education is part of reality and teachers can not deny it, they must be open to this opportunity and get prepared to it.
