Abstract in English
Drug use among school age adolescents is considered an important public health problem. This study aimed at identifying parental practices according to school-age adolescents' perception and its possible influences on drug use. Sample was composed by 257 male and female adolescents, aging from 12 to 18, who where enrolled in secondary education in an Estate school in São Paulo Estate. It is a transversal quantitative study. Three instruments were used for data collection: 1º) a socio-demographic questionnaire, 2º) The Alcohol, Smoking and Substance Involvement Screening Test; 3º) IEP (Parenting Styles Inventory). Univariate descriptive analysis was performed with 95% of confidence interval. Results show that sample mean age was 15 years old, 130(50,6%) male and 127 (49,4%) female, 133 (51,8%) white and most of them living with parents. Alcohol was the most used drug in first use and boys presented 3,3 times more chances to be involved with this substance than girls. This study reveals that negative parent practices are performed mostly by fathers and inconsistent punishment, negative monitoring, negligence (abandonment) and physical abuse are significantly higher among girls than among boys. Negative practices can contribute to adolescent involvement with drug use. Findings can inform the design of orientation proposals for parents about positive practices and its protective effects toward drug use among students.
