Abstract in English
Based on Lazarus e Folkman’s theory (1979) about stress and coping this work intended to answer to questions regarding as nurses of psychiatric services evaluate their work, their mental health and how they cope with them. This research has a quantitative approach. The psychiatric services were classified as open and closed units according to treatment schedules. A closed unity is that where patients stay for longer periods and open units as that where patients have a daily assistence. Twelve nurses from closed units of a general hospital; eleven from a psychiatric hospital and seven from open services participated. In general they evaluated their work as not much demanding. They didn’t identify their mental health as jeopardized. Regarding the coping strategies most of them were used by the nurses of this study and proportionally they used adaptative strategies to face problems at work. Few nurses showed negative evaluations of their work and mental health.
