Keywords in Portuguese
Geração distribuída
Gerador síncrono
Ilhamento
Qualidade da energia elétrica
Rejeição de carga

Analysis of technical requirements for intentional islanding of distributed synchronous generators

Abstract in English
If disturbances occur in a power distribution systems in the presence of distributed generators (DGs), a common practice required by utilities is to disconnect such generators, aiming at avoiding a self-sustained energized island. This procedure is required on order to prevent damage to the whole distribution system, mainly the DG, and to the utility maintenance personnel, as well. However, this requirement may decrease the possible contributions of the distributed generation concepts to the quality of the power supply. In this context, this work aims at analyzing the technical requirements related to make DGs islanded operation feasible. Since most of the loads are dependent on the supply voltage and frequency, the analysis and monitoring of such quantities before and after an islanding event should occur in such a way that the stability of the energized island is granted. To reach such a goal, changes in the DG control modes must be assessed, so that the technical requirements necessary to keep voltage and frequency within statutory limits are fulfilled. Four performance indices have been proposed to assess the power quality in the islanded system. The results have shown the need to perform efficient corrective actions to ensure reliable islanded operation. Moreover, it was observed that voltage-dependent loads may influence the DG capability to sustain stable islands.
