Abstract in English
Photobiomodulation is an effective ergogenic mechanism, but its use in terms of parameters, application models, and wavelengths is conflicting in the literature. There is no investigation of the potential cumulative effects it can generate when applied sequentially without the influence of training, and what is the best wavelength to create the best performance benefit. Objective: analyze the acute and chronic effects of the sequenced application of light-emitting diode (LED) photobiomodulation at different wavelengths in the strength and fatigue resistance abilities of cycling athletes. Methods: The study sample consisted of 48 male cyclists, randomly assigned to four groups: Infrared LED Group (IR), Red LED Group (RED), Infrared LED and Red Group (IR / RED) and Group sham. The athletes underwent performance evaluation through the incremental test, VO2máx, blood lactate analysis, infrared thermography, and isokinetic evaluations. The application of the photobiomodulation occurred on three consecutive days, the LED (180 J) was applied on the quadriceps femoris muscle bilaterally, and after 24 hours of the last application, the reevaluations were performed, followed by a one-week fallow-up. A significance level of 5% was adopted, and the effect size calculated by Cohens'd. Results: There were no significant differences in the analyzed variables in any experimental condition (p> 0.005), but a moderate effect size could be observed for Torque Peak at 60 ° / sec left lower limb (LLL) (0.67), Average Power at 60 ° / sec of the right lower limb (RLL) (0.73) and LLL (0.65) and a great effect size in the Torque peak 60 ° / sec of the RLL (0.98) in the IR / RED group compared to Sham 24 hours after the last application, as well as a great effect size for total time to exhaustion (1.98) and for VO2max (6.96), and a moderate effect size for iLAN (0.62) for the IR / RED group when compared to Sham. Conclusion: Photobiomodulation not associated with training was not able to produce a cumulative effect and increase the strength, endurance and subjective perception of effort in cycling athletes. However effects sizes were observed in the association of two wavelengths in the same application, and this seems to present better results when compared to the red LED, and the infrared LED alone, as well as Sham
