Walking while carrying an asymmetrical-load requires changes from the motor control system to make necessary adjustments and ensure success in performing this task. The challenge becomes more significant when this task takes place on uneven terrains, such as the presence of a curb. In this context, the constraint of arm movements produces changes in the patterns of coordination of the upper limbs, and the presence of the load causes adjustments in the body segments to compensate for the additional weight and ensure body stability. Thus, this work investigated the effects of asymmetric load transport using different types of bags in dominant and non-dominant hands in the coordination of the upper limbs, adaptations of global and local movements, and control of body stability when descending a curb. Seventeen young adults (Study 1) and fourteen older adults (Study 2) participated in this study. They performed the task of walking and descending a 0.16-m curb while carrying bags with 7% of their body mass. The experimental conditions were to walk without the bag (no-load), carrying it (with and without a strap) using the dominant and non-dominant hands. Kinematic data were collected with the Vicon system, based on the Plug-in-Gait Full Body model and the curb negotiation variables, center of mass (COM), and margin of dynamic stability (MDS, Study 2) were calculated, as well as the coordination modes between the shoulders. The results showed in both age groups that the presence of the load led to a reduction in the anti-phase pattern and an increase in the right and left shoulder phases when carrying the bag on the non-dominant and dominant sides, respectively. This result shows that the side carrying the load hardly moved back and forth as is typical of walking. Even in the face of these changes, young adults did not change the curb negotiation variables while the older adults exhibited small adjustments in the vertical distance of the support leg and the foot placement after the curb when carrying the load on the dominant hand. For COM control, the load influenced the medial-lateral amplitude in the young group and the height and vertical velocity of the older adults at the moment of foot-contact on the ground. The analysis of the MDS (Study 2) pointed to the anterior-posterior negative values, although without load effect, indicating instability. However, for the medial-lateral MDS, the values were always positive, and the older adults presented higher MDS in the steps when the load was carried at the same side to the foot that touched the ground. These results show similarities in the shoulder coordination of young and old when carrying the load, but different effects on curb negotiation and body stability control.
