Abstract in English
The objective of this study was to evaluate the repercussions of a hydrotherapy protocol applied to hospitalized preterm newborns, verifying their immediate effects on vital signs, and on the behavioral state (sleep and wakefulness), as well as on the medium term, on the weight gain. It was a longitudinal and prospective clinical trial, in which the pre-terms were allocated randomly into two groups (intervention and control). The sample consisted of 34 babies, with a postconceptional age between 32 and 33 weeks, healthy, of both sexes, and the intervention was performed up to 37 weeks or until hospital discharge. The intervention consisted in the immersion of the baby to the level of the shoulders in warm water, followed by movement during 10 minutes, performed twice a week, with interval of two days between each intervention. At the beginning and 5 minutes after the end of the procedure, the behavioral state of the baby was classified according to the adapted sleep and wake schedule of Brazelton by direct observation and were measured HR, SatO2, axillary temperature, and weight. No difference was found between groups that exceeded normal limits. This study demonstrated that hydrotherapy did not generate any immediate detrimental effect on vital signs or medium term on weight gain and is therefore a safe practice to be applied in patients born with less than 32 weeks of gestational age, even though still without capacity thermal control.
