Abstract in English
Introduction: Breast cancer is the leading cause of death by disease in women worldwide. Screening by mammography and annual clinical breast exams are recommended for their control strategies. One of the reasons for poor adherence of women to prevention programs is the pain associated with mammography. Objective: To evaluate the efficacy of exercise conducted prior to the mammogram in the reduction of perceived pain after the procedure. Methods: This was an open, randomized, controlled clinical trial, whose intervention was a sequence of exercises for warming up and stretching in the upper and lower in women attending the Prevention Department of Barretos Cancer Hospital/Brazil. The women were divided into three groups, the intervention group in the upper limbs (group 1), the intervention group in the lower limbs (group 2) and without intervention group (Group 0). Comparisons between intra and inter quantitative variables using ANOVA and Student's t test with significance level of 5% was taken and held calculating relative risk and measures derived from it. Results: 198 women were evaluated (66 women in each group), the sociodemographic data, as well as, the level of physical activity were not associated with perception of pain after mammography, however, the exercise intervention led to lower perceived pain after the procedure, compared to groups 2 and 0. Conclusion: The physical warm-up exercises and stretching pre-examination were effective in decreasing pain perception and sensation among women who had the intervention of the upper limbs, however, observed also that women in to the legs also presented results from decreased perception of pain compared with the control group.
