Abstract in English
The aim of this study is to describe the nutritional profile and the variables associated with food intake of patients with type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (DM2). This is a descriptive study, inquiry type, conducted with patients registered in Family Health Units of Ribeirão Preto-SP. The sample consisted of 100 participants, and laboratory data were obtained through medical records, and socio-demographic, clinical, anthropometric variables and those related to nutritional profile was obtained through household interviews in the period from January to June in 2015. For data collection, three instruments were used: a structured questionnaire, the food frequency questionnaire (FFQ) and Morisky-Green test. In addition, anthropometric evaluation was performed. To calculate the body fat mass (%)bioelectrical impedance analysis was used. Data were entered into Epi InfoTM 7 software and analyzed using Stata 9.0. The study was approved by the Research Ethics Committee (CAAE: 37043914.6.0000.5414). Data analyzes were performed by means of tables, graphs, descriptive statistics and association tests (odds ratio-OR) with a 95% confidence interval. The chi2 test and Fischer's exact test were used to test associations between groups. To examine associations between numerical variables the Student t test, linear regression and Pearson correlation coefficient (r) were used. The average age of participants was 66.7 years, being 64% female, with prevalence of whites (78%), married (58%), with incomplete primary education (56%). The self-reported morbidity with the highest prevalence was hypertension (71%). In relation to health care, 69% are sedentary, 19% ingest alcohol, 7% are smokers. With regard to the anthropometric data, it was observed that 75% of patients were overweight or obese. Regarding, glycemic control, it became clear that 75% and 60% of patients have a fasting plasma glucose and glycated hemoglobin (Hb1Ac) above the recommended values. Considering food intake, the majority (51%) reported performing four meals a day. With regard to the amount of carbohydrates, proteins and lipids, 64%, 60% and 81%, respectively, of the respondents consume adequate amounts; and 79% consume more than 20 grams/day of fibers. The average Total Caloric Value was 1500 kcal and Basal Metabolic Rate was 1619.5 kcal. The variables that were associated to the adequate intake of macronutrients were higher educational level and the presence of private health insurance. In relation to adherence to the pharmacological treatment, 51% of the patients are adherent to the treatment. Faced with such evidence there is the need to implement nutritional strategies to improve the nutritional care and consequently provide better glycemic control of patients with type 2 diabetes and reduce costs to the health system.
