Este trabalho propõe uma reflexão sobre a relação entre o desenho da cidade e o projeto do edifício através da leitura das transformações no espaço urbano da Avenida Paulista a partir do início do seu processo de verticalização, entre 1937 e 1972. A pesquisa percorre as três fases da história da Avenida até a década de 1970, que correspondem a diferentes formas de ocupação de seu espaço urbano [FRÚGOLI, 2000; LIMENA, 1996; SOUZA, 1986], buscando compreender o desenho proposto pelos edifícios verticais modernos, tanto em relação ao pavimento térreo e a nova espacialidade para o pedestre, como no desenho paisagem construída da Avenida. Concebida no final do século XIX como bulevar destinado a moradia da aristocracia rural paulistana [AZEVEDO, 1954; TOLEDO, 1987], em um período de 35 anos [1937 a 1972], com início da verticalização e o crescimento do setor terciário, a Paulista passa a configurar uma nova centralidade na metrópole, ocupando o centro da discussão sobre o futuro desenvolvimento da cidade [CORDEIRO, 1980; FRÚGOLI, 2000; SOUZA, 1986]. A dissertação é conduzida através de desenhos que, utilizados como instrumento de investigação do espaço, possibilitam a leitura da relação entre áreas construídas e espaços livres, entre a arquitetura - na especificidade do edifício - e o espaço urbano da Avenida.

This dissertation proposes a reflection on the relationship between the urban design and the building design by studying the transformations in the urban space of Paulista Avenue from the beginning of its verticalization process, between 1937 and 1972. The research covers the three phases of the history of the Avenue until the 1970s, which correspond to different forms of occupation of its urban space [FRÚGOLI, 2000; LIMENA, 1996; SOUZA, 1986], seeking to understand the design proposed by the modern high-rise buildings, both in relation to the ground floor and the new spatiality for the pedestrian, as well as in the landscape design of the Avenue. Conceived at the end of the 19th century as a boulevard for the rural aristocracy of São Paulo [AZEVEDO, 1954; TOLEDO, 1987], in a period of 35 years [1937 to 1972], with the beginning of verticalization and the growth of the tertiary sector, Paulista started to form a new centrality in the metropolis, occupying the center of the discussion about the future development of the city [CORDEIRO, 1980; FRÚGOLI, 2000; SOUZA, 1986]. The text is conducted through drawings that, used as a tool for space research, allow the reading of the relationship between constructed areas and open spaces, between architecture - in the specificity of the building - and the urban space.
