Nessa tese visa-se abordar a importância da contribuição da Teoria das Redes para o Projeto Urbanístico. O projeto urbanístico é um tipo de atividade desenvolvida por arquitetos-urbanistas, que lida com a relação espacial do urbano, com o espaço de contato entre os edifícios, e com a relação que a infraestrutura urbana desempenha nesse espaço. A tese que defendo é que hoje, esta atividade projetual deve se basear em um novo paradigma, que tem na Teoria das Redes seu principal embasamento conceitual. Entende-se aqui que um dos problemas mais recorrentes enfrentado por profi ssionais que atuam com projeto urbanístico, é a maneira como a infra-estrutura urbana participa da qualidade do espaço público: esta pode contribuir fortemente com a degradação do entorno onde foi instalada, se for projetada de maneira dissociada desse entorno; ou pode ter a possibilidade de catalisar a modifi cação do uso do solo no entorno próximo aos espaços em que são instaladas de uma maneira interativa. O que acontece é que, de uma maneira ou de outra, percebe-se claramente que a infra-estrutura urbana sempre induz a transformação dos espaços nos quais ou ao redor dos quais é instalada. Com base nessa percepção, a pesquisa aqui apresentada desenvolve-se em quatro partes: um estudo histórico que verifi ca paradigmas característicos de diferentes maneiras de como as redes se manifestaram no tecido urbano; a avaliação metodológica de autores relacionados ao projeto urbanístico que são referenciais seguida da proposição de uma metodologia de projeto urbanístico; e a a aplicação dessa metodologia proposta na análise de projetos urbanísticos referenciais e em alguns projetos de minha co-autoria.

In this thesis the importance of the contribution of the Theory of Networks for the fi eld of urban design is addressed. Urban design is a type of activity develped by architects/planners that deals with the spatial relationships of the urban phenomenon, with the space of contact between buildings and with the role that infrastructure plays within this space. The thesis that I defend is that today this design activity should be based on a new paradigm, that has in the Theory of Networks its main conceptual basis. It is hereby understood that one of the most recurrent problems for urban designers is the way that infrastructure particpates of the quality of public space: it can contribute effectively with the degradation of its surroundings wherever it is installed, if it is designed in a manner that is divorced from such surroundings, or it can show the potential for catalyzing the change of land-uses in the surrounding context in the spaces in which it is installed in an interactive manner. What occurs is that, in one way or other, it is clearly perceived that infrastructure always induces transformations in the spaces within which, or around which, it is implemented. Based on this perception, the research here presented was developed in four parts: a historical study that verifi es paradigms characteristic of the different ways by which networks manifest themselves in the urban fabric; the methodological evaluation of authors related to urban design who are referential, followed by the proposition of a methodology for urban design projects; and the application of this proposed methodology in the analysis of referential urban design projects and in some of my own coauthorship.
