Title in Portuguese
O traço moderno na arquitetura religiosa paulista
Keywords in Portuguese
Arquitetura moderna
Modernidade
Templo cristão

The modern trait in the religious architecture of São Paulo

Modernity
Abstract in English
Basically on the philosophical and historical basis of Modernity there is a marked separation between matter and the more diffuse field of feelings and the "spirit". This dualism would also extend to the artistic field, which in architecture would be characterized in the production of projects where the resolution of functional and technical problems was valued. However, twentieth-century architecture would conform to something larger than strictly functional concerns, the forerunners of modernity themselves did not believe that forms simply followed or deduced from function. The project of secularization existing in Modernity, which aimed at a society based solely on a model of strict rationality was not fulfilled. What we saw was the continuation of a request for a program that was apparently more focused on poetic and metaphorical issues, such as sacred space, even though it was no longer the center of the twentieth century's plastic concerns. Guided by this context, the present study deals with the production of religious architecture developed in the modern São Paulo scenario, identifying the continuities, ruptures and new appropriations in the formal, functional, liturgical and symbolic field. The identification of several projects of São Paulo Christian temples attuned to the modern language made it possible to relate this production to the process of modernization initiated in the first half of the twentieth century, as well as to analyze the architectural projects important for the changes that have occurred in the state of sacred architecture. Such projects show great sensitivity in working with pure forms, justifying within an aesthetic and poetic spectrum the integrity of the geometric tracing of the simple and abstract lines to the modern Temple. The various architects of São Paulo show in their religious production an engagement with the project of the sacred space where it is possible to verify the translation of the presuppositions of Modern Architecture for the theme. A critical historiographical construction guides the work, which together with the presentation of little known projects, recognizes and positions such production as a program belonging to the ideology of the Modern Movement. It also discusses the formal reasons and meanings in the construction of the sacred space, property redeemed by modern architects, who were constantly asked to solve programs like this. The course of the modern trait cut by the religious bias thus seeks to contribute to a broader architectural debate surrounding issues relating to the historiography of modern architecture.
