A presente dissertação de mestrado se propõe estudar o arquiteto norteamericano Pierre Koenig, formado pela University of Southern California em 1953. Os projetos do início de sua carreira, dentre os quais destacam-se as duas residências realizadas dentro do Case Study House Program, foram amplamente divulgados e geraram imagens emblemáticas do modo de vida norte-americano no Segundo Pós-Guerra. Assim, tomando sua trajetória e obra como guia para compreender o desenvolvimento da arquitetura moderna californiana ao longo do século XX. A partir da trajetória de Koenig, o trabalho estabelecerá paralelos entre sua produção e a de outros arquitetos atuantes no mesmo período, assim como sua relação com arquitetos que desenvolvem seus trabalhos na região de Los Angeles desde o início do século XX, olhando a complexidade da produção californiana no Segundo Pós-Guerra e mapeando as contribuições individuais para a formação de um movimento moderno específico. Dessa forma, o que se propõe não é estudar o arquiteto e sua obra isolados, mas entende-los em um contexto mais amplo, a partir de contribuições de diferentes gerações de arquitetos que atuaram nos EUA e contribuíram para o movimento moderno, em especial para a reflexão, proposição e transformação de novos modos de vida na região do Sul da Califórnia. Os enfoques de análise da obra de Pierre Koenig, a partir dos quais se pretende construir as relações com arquitetos de gerações e tradições diversas, têm relação com as questões que orientaram e qualificaram a sua obra: o ensino e a formação dos arquitetos; a atuação profissional dos arquitetos; a relação entre arquitetura e indústria; a constituição de uma nova linguagem; as novas formas de morar e a constituição de um novo modo de vida, tipicamente norte-americano.

This Master's thesis aims to study the American architect Pierre Koenig, graduated from the University of Southern California in 1953, taking his trajectory and work as a guide to understand the development of modern architecture in California throughout the twentieth century. Earlier projects of his career, including the two residences within the Case Study House Program, were widely publicized and generated emblematic images of the American way of life in the Second Post-War period. Departing from Koenig's body of work, this dissertation will establish links between his production and that of other architects working in the same period, as well as his relation with architects who have been working in the Los Angeles region since the beginning of the 20th century, looking at the complexity of Californian production in the Second Post-War period and mapping individual contributions to the formation of a specific modern movement. Thus, what is proposed is not to study the architect and his work alone, but to understand them in a broader context, from the contributions of different generations of architects who acted in the USA and contributed to the modern movement, in particular for the reflection, proposition and transformation of new ways of life in the region of Southern California. The analysis of Pierre Koenig's work, from which one seeks to build relationships with architects of different generations and traditions, is related to the issues that guided and qualified his work: the teaching and training of architects; the professional role of architects; the relationship between architecture and industry; the constitution of a new visual language; the new ways of living and the constitution of a new way of life, typically North American.
