Initially, the present work assesses the representation of the tropical north Atlantic (ATN) climatic variability associated with El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO) and its influence on the extremes of precipitation over Ceará, using the long term reanalyses ERA 20C and NOAA 20CR. The results showed that both reanalyses realistically represent the main circulation patterns on the ATN related to ENSO, although the ERA 20C stood out in the representation of the positioning of the Intertropical Convergence Zone (ZCIT) during ENSO years. Posteriorly, 110 years of data from ERA 20C were used to show how the teleconnection patterns associated with the negative phase of the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO) and El Niño (Central Pacific - El Niño PC and East Pacific - El Niño PL) modify the atmospheric circulation and sea surface temperature (SST) over the ATN and the rainy season in northeast Brazil (NEB). The three phenomena (NAO negative, El Niño PL and PC), without distinguishing the phases of the Atlantic Multidecadal Oscillation (AMO), are associated to the weakening of the North Atlantic subtropical anticyclone and to the development of southerly anomalous winds near the equator, which result in positive SST anomalies in the ATN from summer to autumn. However, the impacts of these low frequency phenomena are different when the distinction of the AMO phases is considered. Therefore, the simultaneously occurrence of NAO and AMO negative phases result in weak westerly anomalies (between 10°-20 °N) and the southerly anomalies are not evident near the equator as occurs when there is no distinction between the AMO phases. Thus, positive SST anomalies occur only northward of 10°N and the rainfall conditions are close to neutrality in NEB. The negative NAO and the El Niño PC, each combined with the positive AMO phase, result in westerly (between 10-20°N) and southerly (between 0-10°N) anomalies stronger than when there is no distinction between the AMO phases. It is also noted a greater warming over the ATN, resulting in below than average rainfall in NEB. The El Niño PL, in both AMO phases, is associated with intense westerly (between 10-20°N) and southerly (between 0-10°N) anomalies also resulting in intense positive SST anomalies over the ATN. This phenomenon is the main modulator of rainfall in NEB, being associated with drought conditions in both the negative and positive AMO phases Finally, the combination of El Niño PC with negative AMO is associated with weak westerly (between 10-20°N) anomalies, and no southerly anomalies are observed near the equator. In this case, positive SST anomalies are concentrated northward of 10°N and in NEB rainfall is in general above average.
