Abstract in English
The sugarcane production system is highly complex and the agricultural intensification is a remarkable need, given the market scenario of increasead demand for biofuel related to environmental concerns and policies of lower emission of carbon dioxide, as well as a scenario of population growth projections pressing on demand for food production areas. In this context, the assessment of the yield gap in farming systems can be a tool to assist in the decisions making process, better management techniques to be used, increasing on-farm efficiency. According to how the needing to yield increase (Ya), this study assumes that the Brazilian sugar-energy sector requires information to consistently improve Ya, especially in regions where the cultivated areas are expanding and the indentification of inefficients areas can help mitigate risks influenced by climate changes adapting the better management practices adopted. Simulation in crop models can help to quantify the yield gap (Yg) by estimating the crop yield potential, and Ya measured by sugar mills can be them used for estimating the Yg. The objectives of this study were to quantify and represent spatio-temporal on-farm yield efficiency, evaluate the influence of management factors and soil in Ya, to quantify and represent in space water productivity. The results showed that despite the sugar mill presents blocks accounting to yield efficiency above the Brazilian average, it has potential to increase the yield among the plots, evidenced by the wide range of Yg between the blocks. The evaluation of management factors showed its importance in spatio-temporal variability, highlighting the need for improvement in management factors, while soils showed an effect on spatial variability. In relation to water productivity (WP), the linear function derived from the relationship between the attainable yield under rainfed conditions and evapotranspirated water by the crop, showed a slope of 0.02 Mg ha-1 and 0.03 Mg ha-1 for Ya and Yw, respectively, for each millimeter of evapotranspirated water. There was a trend to increase in mass yield due to evapotranspiration, since the greater availability of water to the roots represents an increase in mass, due to the greater root absorption suggesting greater water consumption. For the 2013-2017 period, the climate represented 52% of the WPa spatio-temporal variation, while management factors accounted for 40% and the soil contributed to 8%. These results suggest that despite the the climate is the main factor influencing WPa, the management factors stand out due to the great representation of the variability of the data as manipulable factors.
