Abstract in English
In the context of the growing demand to restore Brazilian biomes, natural regeneration is a viable alternative due to its lower cost when compared to other techniques. However, once the regeneration process has been carried out, the understory dynamics of secondary forests is a determining factor for the long-term maintenance of these forests. The present study analyzed the understory community in secondary seasonal semideciduous forests of different ages in the Corumbataí river basin with the purpose of identifying the main variables that affect abundance, diversity and functional composition. All individuals with DBH between 1 and 4.9 cm in 42 plots of 120 m2 were sampled to identify which explanatory variables influence the i) richness, ii) abundance, iii) the percentage of zoochoric individuals and iv) pioneers and v) the Jaccard similarity index between upper stratum individuals and the understory community. Linear mixed models were generated with the following explanatory variables: previous land use (eucalyptus or pasture planting), age, nearest anthropic use (sugarcane planting or pasture), surrounding forest cover, distance from the nearest river, percentage of clay in the soil, basal area of upper stratum individuals, edge distance and percentage of litter covering the soil. We sampled 1707 individuals, belonging to 91 genus, 41 families, distributed in 128 species and 15 morphospecies. The understorey had a larger number of individuals in areas with a higher percentage of clay in the soil, regenerated from abandoned pastures and with sugarcane planting nearby. Areas regenerated from eucalyptus plantations and with greater forest cover in the surrounding area had a higher percentage of zoochoric individuals. No variable was found to explain the richness, the similarity between upper stratum and the understory individuals and proportion of pioneer individuals. Our results show that local and landscape factors act differently in the development of secondary forests in agricultural landscapes, thus providing basis for the management of areas under restoration.
