Abstract in English
Tomato (Solanum esculentum Dunal) is the most important industrialized vegetable crop in the world and the second in terms of cultivated area. This crop presents serious phytosanitary problems during its entire cycle and, among the main pests of the tomato plants, Tetranychus uticae Koch is considered one of the most important phytophagous mite in the whole world, due to its great number of host plants and high biological potential. The control of this mite is extremely difficult, and thereby, the search of alternative methods of control, including the use of natural enemies, is highly desirable. Predatory mites are often considered effective natural enemies of phytophagous mites. The Phytoseiulus genus, Phytoseiidae family, are predators of specific mites species such as Tetranychus. A population of Phytoseiulus longipes found in Uruguaiana, and Phytoseiulus fragariae are both well-known species considered promising for the control of T. urticae in tomato, since both can develop well in this crop. P. macropilis has also been evaluated for the control of T. urticae, however, there arent studies that can prove the efficiency of this predatory mite in this crop. The objective of this work is to realize an initial evaluation of P. macropilis performance in the biological control of T. urticae in tomato crop, taking basis for comparision, a population of P. longipes from Uruguaiana. Two studies were done in laboratory, under controlled conditions: the first was done to verify the effects of the trichomes, present in tomato leaves, over P. macropilis performance. The second, to study the biology and the fertility life table of P. macropilis, when fed with T. urticae reared in tomato leaves. In all realized studies, P. macropilis showed similar results to P. longipes, thus, being considered an efficient T. urticae predator in tomato crop and a promising specie in the biological control programs for this pest in this crop.
