Brazil is one of the largest emitters of greenhouse gases (GHGs) in the world. One way to reduce GHG emissions is the replacement of fossil fuels by biofuels, mainly ethanol derived from sugarcane. The adoption of the unburning sugarcane harvesting system is increasing in recent years. There is a deposition on the soil surface of sugarcane straw ranging from 10 to 18 Mg dry matter ha-1. The decomposition of this material may emit GHGs to the atmosphere. Therefore, the objective of this research was to assess the contribution of the sugarcane straw deposition on the GHG emissions to the atmosphere. The first investigations were carried out through laboratory incubations in order to understand the dimensions and patterns of GHG emissions. For the N2O flux evaluations, different amounts of sugarcane straw were tested. For the CO2 emissions, a total of eight treatments was applied, including temperature, surface or incorporated sugarcane straw, fertilizer addition and pH alteration. Based on these laboratory experiments, the addition of different amounts of sugarcane straw had a significant effect on N2O cumulative emissions. The management system with straw incorporation or in the soil surface, fertilizer addition or change in pH resulted in no change in carbon release. Taking into account the results obtained from the laboratory incubation, an experiment in the field was carried out to assess emission of N2O, CO2, and CH4. The evaluations were done in function of the time after sugarcane harvesting and different quantities of sugarcane straw deposited on the ground. Therefore, the following conditions were evaluated: control (without straw), 50% and 100% of the trash deposited on the soil surface. The experiment was conducted on three variations of Oxisol in the municipality of Iracemápolis, Sao Paulo State, Brazil. The magnitude of N2O emissions from soil and straw in this study are below those observed for other crop management systems in Brazil. There was a significant effect of time after sugarcane harvesting on N2O emissions. For the CO2 emissions, there were significative effects not only for different straw quantities but also for time after harvesting, but not for their interaction. CH4 emissions were not affected neither by the amount of straw on the surface nor by time after harvesting. It should be pointed out that CH4 emissions are below those observed for the other GHG evaluated in this study. It is possible to conclude that the hypothesis of this research was confirmed. However, the results were more expressive for the incubations carried out in the laboratory than the emissions found in field conditions, due to the heterogeneity and complexity of the environment.
