Abstract in English
Many projections point out that the world will have to significantly expand its food production to meet growing demand and Brazil is placed as one of the main global players in this dynamic. Agricultural irrigation in Brazil is a strategy to be developed to make the leap in productivity needed to meet this demand. Targeted public policies are essential for this to occur within a planned and controlled scenario. In this sense, spatially explicit models were developed to provide useful information to guide the decision making of public managers regarding the development of policies to promote irrigated agriculture. Variables such as additional area available for irrigation and field telephone (internet) signal coverage were modeled. The results showed that there is between 68 and 75 Mha of area with potential for irrigation expansion, however, only 5% of center pivots today could be remotely automated using connectivity from excellent 4G broadband mobile phone signal. In this sense, it is necessary that the improvement of infrastructure through its specific public policies is aligned with the public policies for the promotion of irrigated agriculture aiming to reach sustainable rural development goals in the short, medium and long term.
