Keywords in Portuguese
Demanda por combustíveis.
Econometria espacial
Modelagem estatística
Planejamento energético

Abstract in English
The changes observed in the global energy matrix and in the Brazilian fuel market require a deep understanding of the behavior of energy consumption. In this context, the present study aims to understand and measure variables that impact the demand for diesel in the Brazilian states. The adopted methodology uses panel data and spatial econometrics to assess the demand for diesel from 2002 to 2016. The estimated price and income elasticities of demand reached -0.5275 and 0.4247, respectively, for the SLX model with fixed effects. The results also indicated that a growth of 1% in the agricultural production of a state promotes an increase of 0.1471% in the demand for diesel in the same state. Additionally, the estimated parameters show that demand for diesel in a state is influenced by income and agricultural production in neighboring states. The spatial lag of these variables indicated elasticities of 0.2361 and -0.1575 for income and for the value of agricultural production, respectively. The results obtained offer important indications for public policy makers and business actions related to the diesel market in Brazil.
