O setor sucroalcooleiro apresenta historicamente um papel relevante no agronegócio brasileiro, tendo sofrido diversas transformações ao longo do tempo. No início dos anos 2000, o Brasil passou a atuar como principal exportador de açúcar e o segundo maior produtor de etanol do mundo. Consequentemente, foi necessário expandir a produção da matéria-prima desses produtos, a cana-de-açúcar, assim como investir em novos Projetos Greenfields, (construção de novas plantas de processamento de cana-de-açúcar) e, também, expandir as plantas já existentes. Diversos estudos foram feitos para compreender os impactos socioeconômicos do crescimento da atividade canavieira nas principais regiões produtoras do país. Entretanto, ainda existem lacunas a serem preenchidas na literatura científica em relação aos efeitos da mencionada expansão. Nesse contexto, busca-se, na presente dissertação, avaliar os efeitos da expansão do cultivo de cana-de-açúcar sobre o valor da produção agropecuária em nível municipal, focando os estados da região Centro- Sul brasileira, assim como compreender os efeitos do crescimento da atividade canavieira sobre o valor bruto da produção das demais atividades agropecuárias. Para atingir o objetivo proposto, utiliza-se o método econométrico de pareamento por escore de propensão (propensity score matching, na língua inglesa). Os resultados evidenciam a importância do setor sucroalcooleiro para o crescimento do valor da produção agropecuária registrado no período analisado - 2006 a 2010. O estudo é inconclusivo sobre o efeito que a expansão da atividade canavieira tem no valor bruto da produção das demais atividades agropecuárias, que não a cana-de-açúcar.

The sugarcane industry has, historically, played a relevant role in Brazilian agribusiness, which has gone through several transformations over time. In the early 2000s, Brazil became the main exporter of sugar and the second largest producer of ethanol in the world. Hence, it became necessary to expand the production of sugarcane, as well as invest in new Greenfield projects (construction of new sugarcane processing plants) and, also, expand existing sugarcane mills. Several studies have been developed in this area in an attempt to understand the socioeconomic impacts of the increase in sugarcane production in the main producing regions in Brazil. However, gaps remain in the scientific literature regarding the effects of expansion on this sector. In this context, this dissertation aims to assess the effects of sugarcane crop expansion on value of agricultural production at the municipal level, focusing on the states in the Brazilian south-central region, as well as to better understand the effects of the increase in sugarcane production on the gross value production of other agricultural activities. To achieve the proposed objective, the econometric method of pairing by propensity score - known as propensity score matching (PSM) in English - is used. The results highlight the importance of the sugarcane sector for the increased value of agricultural production recorded in the period analyzed - 2006 to 2010. The study is inconclusive on the effect that the expansion of sugarcane production has on the gross value of the production of other agricultural activities, besides sugarcane.
