Este trabalho de pesquisa teve como objeto de estudo uma escola pública periférica paulistana que, embora esteja em uma comunidade com alta vulnerabilidade social, apresenta resultados acima da média da cidade de São Paulo em avaliações externas. Os dados referentes ao Índice de Desenvolvimento da Educação Básica, Índice Paulista de Vulnerabilidade Social e Índice de Desenvolvimento Humano Municipal foram importantes fontes para a definição da escola a ser pesquisada. Visou-se responder uma questão central: em que medida as relações de poder existentes na escola favorecem ou atrapalham o aprendizado dos educandos? Como procedimento metodológico, foram realizadas observações e entrevistas no campo, assim como análises de registros produzidos pela escola.

Abstract in English
The research object of this study was a public high school in the periphery of the São Paulo city. Although this high school is situated in a region with high social vulnerability, it has achieved grades beyond the grade point average of the high schools of the city. Some social index such as the index on the development of the high school, the index on the social vulnerability of the state of São Paulo, and the index on the human development of the city were used in this research. The main question of this work was: how the power relations detected in this high school promoted or hindered the learning of the students? Local observations, interviews in the field and analyses of some manuscripts produced the school were the main methodologies used in this research.
