Abstract in English
Textile products and clothing products are present in all aspects of our lives and move a significant part of the world economy. Issues related to enterprise competitiveness, sustainability, limitation of natural resources, environmental and social impacts are ever more relevant. In this context, the recovery and recycling of textile materials are increasingly necessary, not only in environmental grounds, but also in economic terms. The present study aims to list the main recycling and clothing reutilization techniques; to investigate Brazilian situation in relation to recycling and reutilization of residues; and to present a prospectus of waste sorting for small residue generators. To scale the actions related to the textile recycling in Brazil, several sources were consulted, notably class associations. Due to the lack of information about textile-recycling sector in Brazil in official databases, we opted to use online surveys and secondary sources, i.e., through interviews with companies that, in turn, indicated other companies in the same sector. Among all the located firms, six technical visits were carried out five in textilerecycling industries, and one in a company that offers solutions for the disposal of professional uniforms. Three other companies were interviewed as well. These companies conduct industrial recycling processes by mechanical pulping or by chemically regenerating used fibers. It is possible to state that Brazil has the technology to recycle textile waste derived from the domestic market. However, recycling industries are concentrated in the South and Southeast regions of the country (only three companies were located in the Northeast, and none in the Midwest and Northern regions), leaving several other states without any alternatives for large scale recycling. Additionally, besides being spatially concentrated in two regions, recycling companies are not very numerous, many working within discontinued operations. Of all visited and interviewed companies, only one has a recycling plant integrated with the production of end products directed to consumers or retailers. All others work on demand according to a commissioned amount, that means that each company performs only a part of the work and are not encouraged to recycle larger quantities than that which is required. Reutilization of textile waste can contribute to income generation of many productive groups that fabricate gifts or perform activities related to the creation and production of recycled textile products. Based on the observations made during the technical visits and the interviews, it was possible to identify difficulties common to all recycling companies, especially problems related to the logistics of collection and transportation of waste, as well the acquisition of textile waste organized and separated by composition. Lastly, we put forward a textile waste sorting prospectus for small generators
