Abstract in English
An educational program, concerning 10 critical cognitive points related to the epidemiology of toxocariasis, was applied on 385 children enrolled at an elementary public school named 'Escola Estadual "Profª Clorinda Danti"' in São Paulo city, in Brazil. The five educational resources elaborated were Storyteller, Puppet Show, Comics with supposed Known Characters and Unknown Characters and Theater. After having chosen the resources, the public school teachers had also collaborated with the pedagogical procedures. The cognitive and behavioral immediate learning were conducted by interviews and children behavioral observation on specific situations. It was noticed that 72% of these children live in São Remo Community, a slum area where Toxocara canis is present, the people have very unsound social and economical situations, and their living conditions are very poor. After applying parametric and nonparametric studies, there were no established relations among the fact of children having a dog and answering correctly to the evaluation questions during the interviews (p = 0,61) or having the adequate behavior facing the problem situation (p = 0,586). Statistical significance was found between the two evaluations concerning children who were submitted to Theater and Puppet Show (p = 0,001).The scores on Comics were higher among children who studied in high level groups, but even in this situation Comics scores were below the resources in which oral communication is used (Storyteller, Puppet Show and Theater). This fact could be explained by the unfamiliarity with the comics or absence of basic reading language knowledgment, or skills in children studying in elementary level groups.
