Abstract in English
Emancipatory and socially critical action research is understood as a process of participatory research in which research and actions happen synchronously and are expected to bring about changes based on the interactions and reactions of the participants; the head researcher actively conducts the work and inserts himself in the context of the group under study. The proposal to listen to demands from the community, in inclusive approaches, favors the acceptance of the actions corresponding to the yearnings, although there may be limitations of the method when extrapolating their results to other communities, due to the peculiarities present in each situation. The objective of this study is to verify if the action-research promotes the technical knowledge awareness regarding a low-income community, especially regarding veterinary public health within the context of "One Health". The research utilized questionnaires, interviews, testimonies, presentation of maps, presentation of booklets. Water analysis from wells, streams and water fountains were carried out using the COLIteste® method to estimate the environmental contamination with total coliforms and Escherichia coli and parasitological of domestic animals that cohabit with the same locality, with possibility of contact with other domestic animals, synanthropic and with humans, were carried out using the methods of saturation saturation NaCl solution and spontaneous sedimentation to estimate the occurrence of helminths and protozoa in the communities. Twelve operations were planned of which nine actually occurred and three were ceased due to lack of public. The knowledge acquired by the participants was registered and evaluated in order to conclude whether the educational operations were efficient or not. The results produced in the nine educational actions show: 21 times the data showed discussion about the water theme; 11 records show dialogues about human health; 6 times the theme synanthropic animals can be seen, 5 different moments show that "conceptual errors" emerged in the groups and opportunistic dialogues enlightened the participants; applying the collective subject discourse technique came to: I know that animals can transmit diseases to men, such as rabies and leptospirosis, that we should save water so as not to lack in the future, I also know that we can avoid non-synanthropic animals offering food, water, shelter and access. Veterinary public health doctors can assist me in these tasks. Water and parasitological analysis of animal feces were performed and displayed in order to sensitize people about local sanitary conditions. Water samples were analyzed for microbiology (total faecal coliforms and Escherichia coli) and the positive results served to sensitize participants about the importance of basic sanitation and proper destination of human and animal waste; animal samples were also analyzed for the purpose of exemplifying the possibility of infection in the animals as well as the potential transmission to other animals just as to man. Action-research proved itself useful for health investigation in the communities studied. Even though the number of participants ranged from 1 to 45 at the meetings, health-care practice on veterinary public health issues (within the context of one health) knowledge was transmitted to the remained attendants and this way of working can be used in other communities or even addressing other health issues.
