Brazilian poultry industry stands out in the agricultural scenario due to its high productivity and technicity. In order to reach such productive levels, the animals are frequently submitted to stressful handling conditions that activate both the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis (HHA) and the autonomic sympathetic nervous system (SNS). The present work was carried out to describe the neuroimmune events resulting from an intravenous injection of Escherichia coli lipopolysaccharide (LPS) in broiler chickens, and the effects induced by animals management for treatment and harvest of biological samples. Seven experiments were carried out to show, from a neuroimmunomodulation perspective, the effects of infectious and / or physical stressors application on behavior and on the activities of the nervous, endocrine and immune systems of broilers. For this, broiler chickens were separated into 3 groups, respectively, undergoing LPS treatment, 0.9% NaCl administration or kept without manipulation (control: naíve). LPS administration activated the SNS and the HHA axis increasing the circulating concentrations of corticosterone and adrenaline in the birds thus, acting as an infectious stressor. The chickens that received LPS also presented a series of behavioral alterations that are included in the list of what is called "sickness behavior" and that appears in the presence of infectious processes, being attributed to the presence of proinflammatory cytokines in the CNS. In fact, chickens receiving LPS had higher levels of IL-1 in both the hypothalamus and pituitary in relation to birds of the control and 0.9% NaCl groups. These animals also had greater neural activity, evidenced by the increased expression of the c-fos and EGR-1 genes in the hypothalamus. Management of broilers for 0.9% NaCl administration and subsequent collection of samples for analysis also caused behavioral, nervous and immune changes in relation to the animals of the control group (naive), thus evidencing this type of handling is stressor itseft.
